It’s raining the whole day today. There’s a storm on the eastern part of the country and it is pulling the rains from the west. The result is a wet day today. The temperature is also cold which is very conducive in sleeping. We also had barbeque and the combination of cold weather and good food is a total goodness experience. But I guess the months ahead will redefine cold in my dictionary. We will Migrate to Canada next month and a below zero temperature is something we will deal with.

I saw my orthopedic doctor today. I asked his opinion on how I’d go about since I will Migrate to Canada next mont and my back pain is my concern. As far as he’s concerned, there’s nothing that I can do for now except to prevent it from making it worst. There’s no pill to drink, but he gave me a Physical Theraphy Session prior to me leaving. I’ll take advantage of this offer and hopefully, this would help alleviate my difficulties for my back.

The hockey fans in Vancouver started to riot after their team lost in the NHL championship. Wow! Talk about fanaticism. I’m also a fan but I try not to go overboard and do such things. It’s like putting their lives into something that is of a fantasy. The sport must be treated as an entertainment and fanaticism takes no place in that. When I Migrate to Canada, I’ll watch hockey and support the team. But I definitely won’t go out and burn tires or throw stones whenever my team loses.

Twenty Days

14Jun11

I have twenty days  … then its goodbye office. I’ll miss my cubicle, my gadgets, my friends … everything. This I have to do because I’ll Migrate to Canada soon. Right now, I’m still working but on the side I’m doing my preparations for migration. It’s hard but I need every cent since moving out of the country is expensive. I hope to get a job there immediately so that my cash will be kept intact.

Postal Mail

14Jun11

How long does it take for your mail to arrive? I’m referring to the traditional snail mail. Here in our country, it takes at least 5 days for the snail mail to arrive. And that is within the same zone only. So you can just imagine how long it takes when  I use the snail mail for provinces or even abroad. I’ll Migrate to Canada soon and this will hopefully change my mentality towards postal services.

5 weeks

11Jun11

I have 5 weeks and we are Migrating in Canada. Despite all the preparations that I made before, there are still many tasks to do. I’m hate cramming but there are things that are dependent on the release of the Visa. I have listed the things to do and I intend to finish it on the next three weeks. I hope that the last two weeks here in our country would be chilling out and just tying the loose ends. It’s exciting!

Someone told me that a person needs to walk ten thousand steps per day to have a significant change in body weight. A Pedometer is often used as a tool to measure the number of steps that you do. I’m calculating that on a daily basis, I can’t even reach 2000 steps! So I need to exert more effort for it. Migrating in Canada would help me since I plan to commute and ride the bus or train instead of driving. This would give me the opportunity to improve my walking abilities!

National Museum

07Jun11

For all the years of my existence I haven’t been to the National Museum. First of all, I never realized that it was located on the center of the Metro. The next thing, the government does not do a good job in promoting the place. I only found the place by chance when my wife and I went to the Department of Tourism. I went there to get some travel tax exemption which is needed as part of my preparation for Migrating in Canada. I was curious because the building beside the Department has a good architectural structure. Then the guard told me that the building was the National Museum. Such a pity that I only found about this place when I’m about to leave the country.

We’re going on shopping later. It’s not as if I have passion for shopping, for now it needs to be done. We are Migrating in Canada next month and we need to have a new set of clothes. It’s a blur, we’re preparing everything and we’ve been doing this for the past several months.

Denying yourself of life’s little pleasures can lead to success in personal finance. Living frugally requires a lot of sacrifice which explains why many don’t engage in such. The temptation of splurging money is so hard to resist that the concept of saving for tomorrow is easily forgotten. Those who continue to choose to live for today justify their lifestyle by saying that “Life is to short, you’ll never know when you’ll go so might as well enjoy now than regret”. But what IF (and that is a big if) you’re bound to live longer than others?

The table from Reuters below shows that as of 2004 the average life expectancy of a Filipino is 70.7 years old. That is 68.6 for male and 72.8 for female. It also shows that the life expectancy extends by 2% every four years (translation: People will live longer!). So if you are 20 years old today, then by the age of your retirement (which is forty years from now), you are expected to live for another 27.9 years (with the life expectancy reaching 87.9 years by that time). That is assuming of course you’ll only be on the average (but there is also a chance that you may even outlive that).

This is why we need to plan for our finances now. An aging man with no wealth to stash is a pitiful sight don’t you think? Imagine having to live the full of the 27.9 years after retirement with meager or no resources at all!

Ric Edelman in his book “The truth about money” wrote it perfectly:

“You will be on this earth for 40, 60 or 80 more years. You can choose to live month-to-month as you have been living, or you can choose to live better. Give up you materialism for a few years, reduce your needs for now, and one day, you’ll be able to exceed your current lifestyle. All it takes is a little effort each day, and a lot of days.

There isn’t any magic to this, no get-rich scheme. And while you may be afraid of how much time it will take to succeed, that’s nothing compared to how much time is really left in your life. So what if it takes you 10 years to get out of debt? You’ll still live have 30 or 50 or 70 years to enjoy after that.”

Your lifestyle will always be a choice, are you living for today or do you want to enjoy the luxuries for tomorrow? It’s your call.
